This year’s Breakthrough National Conference brought together affiliate leaders, National Office staff, and special guests from across the country for two unforgettable days in New Orleans. Centered around the theme “The Next Chapter: Building Our Future Together,” this year’s conference was a powerful moment to reflect on our collective progress, share ideas, and prepare for the future.
Hosted by Breakthrough New Orleans, the gathering opened with our State of the Collaborative address, where CEO Vince Marigna set the tone for the conference.
“I believe we are all builders at Breakthrough: our students, Teaching Fellows, alumni, affiliates, and the National Office. And it’s together that we’re building a stronger future for those who will come after us. Ask any good builder and they will tell you – progress takes vision, planning, and teamwork. They’ll also tell you it’s hard work. But when you’re building something that’s meant to last, every hand and every piece matters.”
On the first day, attendees engaged in sessions on fundraising, local recruitment, college access, and branding, exchanging ideas and strategies to strengthen the network. The day also featured a keynote from Lisa María Rhodes, Breakthrough alum and founder of Alas, which supports teachers and social workers in New Orleans schools. Lisa and youth from Alas inspired the audience with powerful stories of advocacy and empowerment, reminding us of the enduring impact of Breakthrough’s mission. The day concluded with a lively networking happy hour, giving colleagues from across the country a chance to connect and celebrate their shared work.
The second day captured the joy and spirit that make Breakthrough unique. It began with the All School Meeting (ASM)—a pep-rally-style celebration filled with games, cheers, and energy. A cheer clinic got everyone involved, and a surprise second line band played “When the Saints Go Marching In” as award recipients were honored. Breakthrough recognized contributions across the network with the Collabies:

- Sharing Success Award: Breakthrough Cincinnati
- Creative Community Award: Breakthrough Houston
- Data Champion Award: Dr. Sara Marcopulos
Following ASM, attendees participated in sessions on collaborative standards and instructional training, deepening their understanding of strategies to support Teaching Fellows and students in the classroom. A data party celebrated summer program results and provided space to gain clarity on programmatic impact, while consultancy sessions allowed participants to collaborate, problem-solve, and exchange insights with peers from across the network.
We are grateful for the energy, ideas, and dedication brought by everyone who attended, and for the incredible work of the Planning Team and affiliates who made the conference possible.
As we left New Orleans, one thing was clear: the future of Breakthrough is bright—and we’re building it, together.
