In this interview, Brooklyn reflects on his time at Breakthrough at Kent Denver, sharing insights into his journey, the impact it had on him, and the meaningful connections he made with the students he mentored.
Q: How was your summer at Breakthrough Collaborative?
Brooklyn: This has probably been one of the most transformative summers I’ve had. I’ve learned so much about myself, about others, and about education in general. There were plenty of memory-making moments, but also very tough ones that challenged me in many different ways. It’s hard to put into words what this experience has meant to me, but I definitely appreciate everything that Breakthrough has offered me this summer.
Q: Thinking back on when you first learned about the program, what motivated you to apply to Breakthrough?
A: The main reason I applied to Breakthrough was to see how I would handle being in front of a classroom. I had a lot of self-doubt and insecurities about teaching, but Breakthrough offered me a safe space to take that risk and grow. Knowing that I could try, fail, and still learn from the experience motivated me to complete the application and commit to the program. It was a chance to develop without the pressure of being perfect, which was exactly what I needed at that stage in my education journey.
Q: What was the most rewarding part of working with middle schoolers?
Brooklyn: The coolest thing I saw this year was how some of my quietest students came out of their shells. Middle school is such a formative period, and seeing these kids become more confident and comfortable with themselves was amazing. It’s not even about grades or formal schooling; it’s about them discovering who they are. That was the most rewarding part—seeing them grow into themselves and recognizing their own potential.
I’ve also noticed many similarities between myself and my students, particularly in our backgrounds and attitudes towards school. Both of us are still learning, and there’s a shared understanding of the challenges and rewards that come with education. This connection has been meaningful for me, as it reinforces the idea that we’re all in this together, learning and growing side by side.
Q: Why do you think programs like Breakthrough are important for students?
A: Programs like Breakthrough are essential because they create an environment where students from diverse backgrounds can come together, break down barriers, and focus purely on learning. Unlike traditional school settings, where competition and individualism can dominate, Breakthrough allows students to embrace their own learning journey without the pressures of grades or ranks. This unique approach makes teaching and learning more enjoyable and less stressful, fostering a community where every student can thrive.
Q: Looking back to the beginning of the summer, how do you think you’ve changed?
Brooklyn: It’s funny looking at photos from the start of the summer. I was often crossing my arms or holding them in a certain way—signs of how insecure I was. Breakthrough has given me so much resilience. I used to be nervous when working with middle schoolers and kids in general, but this experience has really helped me see my own value as a person. I’ve become less self-conscious and more open to new things. Because every day is unpredictable, you’re forced to be open and it allows both the students and Teaching Fellows to grow together.
Q: What is your biggest takeaway from your experience with Breakthrough?
A: My biggest takeaway is realizing that I can do it. Overcoming self-doubt and proving to myself that I could successfully teach and connect with students has been incredibly validating. The confidence I gained from this experience is invaluable, and it makes me proud to know that I took advantage of this opportunity and made the most of it. I know I’ll carry this confidence with me in my future endeavors, and I’m excited to return to Breakthrough for as long as they’ll have me.
