Earlier this month, Breakthrough alumni, education leaders, advocates, and supporters convened in Houston for The Breakthrough Experience, a first-of-its-kind national convening designed to activate leaders, accelerate our mission, and strengthen the shared vision that has guided our work for more than 45 years.
Over the course of two powerful days, we came together to deepen relationships, exchange ideas, and engage in meaningful conversations about the future of education. At the heart of every session, panel, and gathering was a central theme: advancing educational opportunity and building the next generation of educators and advocates.
We were honored to hear from two keynote speakers who brought urgency and inspiration to the stage: Lavada Berger, a longtime education leader and advocate for sustainable change in schools, and Patty Williams-Downs, a champion for youth development and thriving for all communities, whose remarks challenged us to “Break Something,” reaching beyond what’s possible.
Our breakfast and lunch plenary panels were a centerpiece of the weekend, engaging attendees in dynamic discussions about expanding access to college, strengthening the teaching workforce, and expanding systems of support for students. Participants also explored a rich lineup of breakout sessions, where they connected across roles and regions to share practices, unpack challenges, and build strategies for lasting impact in their communities. From student support frameworks to community engagement, these sessions offered engaging content and discussion, and left attendees with various insights to bring back to their networks.
The weekend also featured several standout moments beyond the mainstage. Friday evening’s alumni gathering brought together former Teaching Fellows and staff from across the country for a vibrant celebration of Breakthrough’s national network and its growing leadership pipeline. Attendees also explored a powerful interactive installation tracing Breakthrough’s 47-year history—an inspiring look at our evolution from a local program to a nationwide movement for students and aspiring educators. And through Breakthrough’s collaboration with J.Crew, attendees received professional styling, and walked away with complimentary headshots—an experience that reflected our investment in preparing future leaders to show up with both confidence and capability.
This weekend would not have been possible without the dedication of our host committee, event chairs, generous sponsors, and vendors, who brought The Breakthrough Experience to life. We are especially grateful to our speakers and staff who helped shape the agenda and create a space for learning, reflection, and action.
Breakthrough Collaborative is creating a movement of college-ready middle and high school students, aspiring educators, and education advocates to become the next generation of leaders in their communities. The Breakthrough Experience was a reflection of that mission in motion—and a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we build together.
